Ok, ladies and gents. I love a good adrenaline rush, and scary movies and nightmares satiate that desire. This post is a different than anything else I’ve written. Just another day in the life of me. 🙂
Jade
My heart is steady as I walk down the stairs. I’ve lived in this house for 22 years, so navigating in the dark is second nature. Unbeknownst to me, I have become desensitized to the darkness, and that is all because of second nature. The childhood monsters that used to lie in wait within it have ceased to exist now.
As I head into the kitchen for my midnight drink, I hear subtle sounds of movement behind me. I immediately turn around, but nothing is heard. “Blame it on the groggy state… because you’re hearing things,” I think to myself. The blood in my veins has gained a bit of speed. Tonight is becoming something unfamiliar, but I shrug it off.
I reach for the fridge and tug it open. The light emitting from within it barely illuminates the kitchen, but is enough to confirm visually what I believe by second nature to be the layout of the kitchen. As I reach for my favorite midnight drink, I see on the right-side of my peripheral vision a human-like figure watching me from the kitchen corner. I let out a high pitch scream. I drop my drink, and scream even more at the top of my lungs. Before I hear the thump of the container hitting the ground, I run to the left, where the opening of the kitchen is to flip the lights on. Once I do, I frantically turn towards the other side of the kitchen listening intensely for movement, but the only thing heard, beside the racing of my beating heart, is the emptying of a gallon of my snack. I’m desperately searching the other corners of the kitchen hoping that something, someone was actually there, but to no avail. My blood is rushing uncomfortably.
I repeatedly exhale slowly to prevent a heart attack; I feel as if my heart could burst at any minute. As I continue trying to breath steadily, I return to the refrigerator door. I spilled a lot, and I am annoyed beyond measure. I want my parents to return from vacation. The monsters that live in the shadows seems to have returned after 10 years. I grab a towel, and get on all fours to clean the mess I’ve made.
Tonight has become something unfamiliar.
Jack
I’ve been in jail for 10 years for Breaking and Entering with conspiracy to do really bad things. Lucky for me Jade’s family still leaves a back up key under the flower pot. Their old habits die hard. Mine too. I noticed the door didn’t squeak while sneaking into their house. Years of opening it while they slept always had me worried that they would wake up from the sound. Thank goodness they fucking fixed it. Besides that, this house hasn’t changed much it seems. I stand in front of the mirror next to the stairs, but I can barely see myself in the dark. I hear someone coming down the stairs. I place myself deeper into the shadows by moving closer to the mirror. My, my, my, my. Little Jade has grown. She unknowingly passes right in front of me. Her body from head to toe is intoxicating. She’s wearing an almost skin-tight black tank top that’s tight enough to accentuate her mature areas. On the bottom-half, she has on pink shorts branded with Pink. Never heard of the brand, but thank the designer because it partly shows that tush of hers. At that moment, I get so lost in my thoughts of her that I subconsciously reach out to grab her from behind. Shit. She heard me. I stay silent hoping the darkness completely envelopes me. It has to because she is looking directly at me, but she doesn’t see me at all. I let out a very quiet sigh of relief when she continues on to the kitchen. I bet she’s heading for her usual midnight snack; a cup of milk. Old habits die hard indeed. Tonight is becoming something familiar.
I’m glad she didn’t turn on the kitchen lights. Even still, the fridge’s internal light could be a problem if I am trying to sneak up behind her. She might see me moving from the side of her eye, and I’ll get caught. My heart is pumping. This is invigorating. I begin to move out of the shadows, and place my first step in the kitchen’s entrance. Suddently, Jade starts screaming. Did she see me? How the fuck did she see me so fast. I step back, and pull the knife out. She’s running towards me now, and I prepare to thrust it down right into her skull. Maybe her heart. Or shall I go sideways into her jugular. She stops suddenly, flips the kitchen lights switch on, and immediately turns towards the kitchen. The kitchen lights are strong, if she turns back around she will see me. I can’t move otherwise risk her hearing me. She’s just standing there looking into the kitchen. It must have been a cock roach or maybe a mouse. Bitches hate mice. My blood is rushing uncomfortably, and it feels good.
She’s walking back into the kitchen. I’m elated that I can enjoy watching her for just a couple more minutes now. It has been a decade since I last laid eyes on her, and the lights are doing an excellent job of revealing her matured body. Ooh, she’s on all fours now. I can’t help but lick my lips. I can’t help but think of naughty things. I can’t help but satiate my hunger. I grip my knife with fervor. I walk up behind her without making a sound.
Oh tonight has alas become something familiar.
