Ok, ladies and gents. Samsung Galaxy promoters have made their stop at Purdue University during their #GalaxyCampus tour. They presented us with a challenge of being creative in order to win a prize. I immediately began generating ideas and decided to make up a story. As I began writing the story, I completely forgot about the challenge and the prize. I enjoy exercising creativity with small activities, and I thank Samsung for reminding that little things can make you smile a whole lot. Without further adieu… Just another day in the life of me. 🙂
Note: You may want to read the comments section after you read the story to understand some of the concepts.
Every year, on February 12th, she visited the planet Uiryeong to pay respects to the life of her father, B.L. This is the story of Hee Young.
In the planet of Daegu, Hee Young lived with her three children. She loved telling bed time stories to her children because they loved it even more. Little did they know know, that one of the stories they particularly loved, wasn’t a story at all.
“Yes!”, the children shouted together.
“Then get your butts in the bed, and stop shouting”, Hee Young laughing the words out.”
“We’re ready!”, the children yelling again.
“Lets begin then. Well, it was a family just like ours. The mothers name was H.Y.”
“Is H.Y. you mom?!”, Young Il, the oldest child, interrupted.
“No. I couldn’t be even if I wanted to, and you’ll find out soon enough. Now, no more interruptions. Got it?”
“Yup!”, Young Il tucked herself in even further while she stared at her mom anticipating an adventurous story.
“They all lived surprisingly average lives, well as average as the offspring’s of The Overseer could be.”
You could here Hee Young’s two sons whisper under the covers in awe- and amazement-like manner, “The Overseer”.
“The Overseer had one role, one purpose: to govern a stretch of a solar systems and clandestinely inspire and drive innovation simultaneously not alerting the inhabitants of the solar system.”
This time the sons interrupted. “What does ‘clatestines’ mean mom?”, Jae, the youngest said.
Jung also stepped in. “Yea, what does ‘simutmusly’ mean? Stop using big words, my brain is gonna start hurting if you keep doing that.”
“Sorry munchkins. Ok. The Overseer had one role, one purpose: to govern a stretch of a solar systems and secretly inspire and drive creativity, but at the same time making sure no one knew about it in the solar systems. The Overseer did this in secret in fear that his offspring’s may be attacked if certain scary people knew what he was doing. Some scary people don’t like competition, and only wanted creativity for themselves. Selfish.”
The kids, in unison, made a ‘humph’ as to express agreement.
“The last Overseer, the late B.L., had passed away 30 years ago. He had an amazing daughter H.Y. at a very old age prior to his death. B.L. had left instructions for H.Y., without her knowing, on how to become the Overseer. He entrusted her with the task of governing the system and continuing to drive creativity. Cuz you know, thats a very important task right? Jae, since you are the artist of the family, maybe you can draw something creative for us that represents this story after we have heard it all?”
Hee Young continued the story after Jae nodded in confirmation.
“Now, this is going to be a surprise for you. Did you now that H.Y.’s children’s name had exactly the same names as you guys?”
“Mom you’re making up a story about us! Stop playing around” Young Il shouted. All the children begin laughing hysterically.
“Calm down. Calm down, it is just a coincide… its just happened randomly. I promise. Now, Jae, Jung, Young Il were more fortunate than others because of their grandfather’s inheritance, but oddly enough the children never lived extravagant lives. They lived as normal as you munchkins; wake up, play, eat, play, fall and get hurt, cry, run to mommy, play some more, but not before throwing up from running around on a stomach full of dinner.”
“Ewwww”, the children remarked in unison.
“Ew indeed, but you know what? Every single day, they enjoyed the time spent with each other, including the hurts and throw-ups!”, she said giving her children a bright smile under the lightly dimmed room. Her countenance, however, slowly morphed from one of elation to one of the opposite nature, but the children could not notice such detail.
“It seemed like the fun would never end, and H.Y. didn’t want it to end. But, exactly 30 years after her birth, a note magically appeared in front of her in the form of a hologram. You know what it said?”
Young Il was the first to answer, and she responded with “something that will end the fun”?
“Yes. Yes, indeed. The note …”
“Ooo! I know! Its the instructions.” Young Il interrupted.
“Ahh you were paying attention. Thats why I call you the production engineer, because details matter to you guys. The note contained detailed steps to become The Overseer, and it was definitely time for her to do so because creativity was decreasing among the planets in H.Y’s solar system. Why? Well, lets first pretend creativity is a flower. For a flower to flourish, you need to water it and provide a good source of sunlight. By doing so, the flower will grow right? Well, the last 30 years creativity hasn’t been properly nourished. Once a planet thinks of a creative idea, that same planet makes it a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious rule that no other planet can use the idea to make something more creative. That’s what I meant by people ‘only wanting creativity for themselves.'”
Jae sat up quickly and yelled “Selfish!”
Hee Young watches her youngest one with such delight, yet a tears begins to form in the corner of her eye.
“Lay down Jae. This is bedtime story, so get in it. You’re correct though. So you will definitely understand why H.Y. needed to become The Overseer. However, just like her father, she feared for her children’s safety because scary people may attempt to hurt them too.”
“But who was The Overseer during the past 30 years?” Young Il asked.
“Good question. Before he became The Overseer, Mr. Jobs from the planet of Cupertino, was a very creative man who designed one of the best technologies known to man. The underlying technology wasn’t so different than what everyone had seen before, which was a solar system map information (SSMI); It helped people see all the information about a solar system, the planets contained within them, and the planet characteristics. Basically, it was like any other similar technology during that time. What made it so special was the user interface and the unique things it could do that others couldn’t do. The user interface was super cool and super awesome. Many were jealous, and many were inspired to use similar ideas. The problem here is that a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious rule was set that no one could use that idea or anything similar. What made it worse is that Mr. Jobs then became the Overseer, and drove down the creativity so no one can think of anything better. Did I answer your question?”
“Yes, I understand for the most part I think.” Young Il responded.
“… ahhh My brain hurts.” Jung whined.
“Sorry son, but you have to keep up if you’re going to be able to design things for people with ideas. So, back to the note. H.Y. forced Mr. Jobs from the position of The Overseer without him knowing it was her. Once in position, H.Y. began her duty, and you could see positive results in the months to follow. Other planets began competing with Mr. Jobs original idea. Mr. Jobs, however, is a smart one. He knew his position couldn’t have been forcefully taken so easily unless someone knew special techniques he was not aware of. Special techniques that the first Overseer would only know. Special techniques that the first Overseer might have entrusted to his only daughter.”
Her face became further somber. The kids noticed this time, and understood that the villain of the story is about to make his move.
“Mr. Jobs was absolutely sure that the current Overseer was H.Y. The job of Overseer is not an easy task, and requires a lot of effort and time. The time spent driving creativity in the solar systems is more than enough time for someone to plot an evil plan. Three years is enough time to figure out how to kidnap three special and wonderful children from the Overseer.”
Jae gasped and said “He kidnap them?!”
“Yea. He did more than that. He threatened the new Overseer, H.Y., that if she didn’t give him back the power, something awfully bad would happened to her children the next day.”
“What happened? What happened?” they all yelled, grabbing their bed sheets tighter.
“To keep the story short, she had only one option. H.Y. knew the power of Overseer should not be given to Mr. Jobs, but as a mother she desired to protect her children her more the power. She fought with herself the whole day trying to decide what to do. She refused to abandon either. Then H.Y. remembered something very important. She remembered one key information B.L, the first Overseer, left her in the note: the power to transform an object into a star. It could not be any object, but a special object. The more special it is to you, the bigger and more beautiful the star will be.
“How can a star save them from Mr. Jobs? Is H.Y. going to wish upon the star to get rid of Mr. Jobs?!” Jae guessed.
“Not ‘a’ star, but three stars. H.Y. followed the instructions to make a star, and although she could not see them,…”
As her tears begin to flow down the sides of her face, Hee Young opens her arm as she finishes her sentence “… she transformed her children into three gigantic beautiful stars. Nothing like you’ve ever seen. Each star was placed at the center of a solar system within the jurisdiction of the Overseer. This way, Mr. Jobs could not attempt to harm the children ever again, and H.Y. could keep the power of The Overseer.”
“Mommy. That’s a sad story. The children can’t talk to their mom anymore because they died and became a planet.” Watching his mom in emotional pain, Jung began teary-eyed as he said that.”
Hee Young gets up, and tucks them all into bed one last time. She makes sure that their tears are silenced before she continues on with the ending. She walks towards the door. “Don’t cry. This is a happy ending. They aren’t dead. Planets are living beings. They live almost forever, which means H.Y., Jae, Jung, and Young Il can talk to each other for almost forever too.”
“But how can they talk to each other?” Jung replied.
Hee Young steps outside the room, and peeks her head in before she closes the door. “Three years after H.Y. became the Overseer, she inspired someone to create a special user interface to talk to planets.”
With Young Il interest peaked, she yelled out as the door is closing “What’s the name of this interface?!”
Immediately after the door closes, Hee Young is standing, watching a hologram projected from a device. She could see her children in their previous and current form. From her view should could see a hologram of the children’s room which is superimposing on top of three gigantic planets highlighted by the hologram as well.
The Young Il in the hologram begins to lay back down, slightly dissatisfied. But as she begins to fall asleep, she hears the whispers of her mother.
“Samsung Galaxy… is the name of the interface. Sweet dreams.”
The next morning, Hee Young opens the SSMI and noticed three things on the floor. Cluttered together, was a sketch, a technical schematic of the sketch, and then the image brought to life. “It seems the children’s been busy while I slept.” She smiled and began preparations to leave planet Uiryeong.
